“On April 18, Shikoku Medical College signed a sister college agreement with AIMC Berkeley. This is the first such agreement for Shikoku Medical College. The purpose of this agreement is to provide a system of education that will create international practitioners, as well as to provide an overseas exchange program…” [ article continued below].

…AIMC Berkeley was established in 1990. Its curriculum teaches acupuncture and herbal (Kampo) medicine. AIMC is one of the pioneers in developing Oriental Medicine in the U.S.A. They have been developing the concept of this agreement over the past several years.

This agreement enables students from both schools to academically and culturally exchange their knowledge, and Shikoku Medical College graduates may attend AIMC Berkeley at less cost. It gives students from Japan the opportunity to earn a Masters degree in Oriental Medicine and apply for a California acupuncture license.

At the signing event, AIMC Berkeley President Tanaka stated, “Acupuncture is becoming a world-level medicine. I believe this agreement is another step forward for acupuncture. ”

Shikoku Medical School President Norimatsu was also positive, saying “acupuncture has variation within its field. My wish is that students will learn acupuncture with a global vision.”

AIMC Berkeley is excited to announce the opening of a new specialized clinic dedicated to treating lower back pain. SF Giants team acupuncturist and AIMC Berkeley alum, Haro Ogawa, is moving his private practice to Berkeley to focus his efforts on the treatment of chronic lower back pain, an increasingly frequent complaint that studies show is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor or miss work.

Lower back pain is often attributed to strains or structural problems including ruptured discs, sciatica, arthritis, or osteoporosis. Factors that increase one’s risk of developing low back pain include physically strenuous work, sedentary and/or mentally stressful work, anxiety, depression, obesity, and even smoking. Very often the exact cause of lower back pain remains unknown, making it difficult to treat with Western medicine.

Haro Ogawa’s approach to providing relief for lower back pain is a simple, whole-body treatment lasting 20-40 minutes and utilizing a variety of treatments (depending upon the patient) to effectively reduce pain. Treatment protocols include a unique combined Japanese and Traditional Chinese Medicine style of acupuncture; electrical stimulation; infrared lamp; and herbal medicine; as well as functional stretching and joint mobilization techniques, as needed. Patients can experience significant improvement in pain after just one treatment, and regular treatment is shown to encourage longer periods of relief between visits and help prevent pain from returning.

Haro will be open for business beginning on April 16 in the AIMC Berkeley Professional Clinic at 2550 Shattuck Avenue. Treatments will run from 30-40 minutes in length and cost $120 per initial visit and $95 per follow-up appointment. A discount will be provided to Cal Berkeley athletes and local high school student athletes.

Call 510 666-8234 to make an appointment.

Haro has an extensive sports medicine background and many years of professional experience working with multiple Japanese baseball, NBA, and NASCAR athletes. A Japanese-trained acupuncturist and certified Shiatsu therapist, his specialty utilizes the kinesiological field for manual therapy in sports medicine. Haro graduated with a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from the Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley (AIMC Berkeley), where he teaches Acupuncture Techniques and Oriental Medicine Bodywork, and supervises student interns in the school’s community clinic.

FROM THE PREFACE
The 21st century has long been heralded as the age of the mind, and psychological well-being is now considered an integral part of health. The aim of “health sciences of mind and body,” an academic field of this book, is to address the organic relationship between m ind and body and to scientifically, theoretically, and empirically map out various phenomena associated with mind-body correlation, and thus carry out a holistic inquiry into human health. It is an attempt to comprehensively view and integrate a wide range of fields outside of conventional health sciences, including life science, behavioral science, stress science, psychosomatic medicine, basic medicine, bioethics, and cultural science to thus elucidate the correlation between the mind and body as well as the mechanisms that govern life.

I have known Dr. Mari Kusumi, President of the University of Human Arts and Sciences, for fifteen years and have always been impressed with her advocacy for “lifelong health” and the inherent connection of “Mind and Body”. Health Sciences of Mind and Body synthesizes her philosophy and cogent perspectives on health issues and lifelong health.

Her writing, as well as that of twelve contributing scholars, provides compelling evidence of the movement towards integrated medicine which empowers individuals to achieve “lifelong health”. The research presented is current, well documented and refreshing. Dr. Kusumi is to be commended for her insight and her foresight in remaining open to new ideas and advocating exemplary research.

This book provides a refreshing view of health care with emphasis on interdependence. Her advocacy of knowledge for well-being is the common thread throughout the book. Health Sciences of Mind and Body will most certainly be widely read while adding a vital contribution to our knowledge base.
